Seattle is one of the fastest growing cities in the United States, expected to welcome many thousands of new neighbors over the next 20 years. With them come jobs, ideas, energy – but also the need for a place to live. The City of Seattle has committed to 50,000 new housing units in Seattle in the next 10 years. People move here because they are attracted by our livable neighborhoods, our strong communities, and our remarkable natural environment. However, the pressures of growth challenge these core assets, and create pressure on those who may no longer be able to afford to live here. How do we provide for the growth in our city, while retaining the culture and livability and access to housing that are so much a part of our Seattle experience? What new solutions can good design contribute to our housing crisis? Exhibits and programs will explore Seattle’s housing challenges through the lens of design, seeking inspiration and fresh solutions to meet the needs of all Seattle residents.
